The fascinating history of Mongolian Traditional yurts.
Reading time: 5 minutes
Long, long ago, in the vast steppes of Central Asia, a unique tale of yurts began. Nomadic tribes roamed the endless plains with their homes on their backs, ready to settle wherever the wind guided them.
Did you know that yurts are more than ordinary tents? They are cleverly designed, elegant round shelters.
The story starts with a sturdy wooden frame covered in durable felt, resistant to the passage of time and the whims of nature. The circular lattice wall, also known as 'khana,' embraces the yurt like a warm hug.
The central roof opening, or 'tunduk,' allows the wind in and the smoke from the fire to escape. Who would have thought that ventilation could be so stylish?
The history of the yurt resonates with nomadic songs and family laughter in this round oasis. The word "yurta," Turkish for "dwelling," promises to be a home, and in Mongolia, we say ''GER''.
The Mongolian Empire elevated the yurt to new heights. "Good enough for the Great Khan, good enough for us," they said. It became a comfortable symbol in the vast steppes, with even Marco Polo reportedly jealous of this portable palace.
And so, the story of the yurt continues, with its timeless form enduring modern trends.
The next time you see a yurt, think about the age-old journey of this modest round shelter. You might discover a piece of history as captivating as the yurt's round doors!

Tips to Keep Your Yurt Warm During Winter Days
Winter days bring a unique charm, but keeping your yurt cozy in the cold can be a challenge. Fortunately, there are several smart and creative ways to retain heat and enhance comfort. Here are some handy tips:
1. Use of (Gas Station) Coal:While using a heater is an obvious choice, the type of fuel can make a significant difference. While wood stoves generate heat quickly, using coal, such as gas station coal, can provide a longer-lasting heat release. A good tip is to burn this coal in the evening, allowing you to enjoy warmth throughout the night.
2. Insulation with Curtains: Hang curtains around the walls of the yurt as an additional insulation layer. This not only helps in retaining heat but can also serve as a decorative element. Below, you can see some photos from our customers who have implemented this idea.
3. Close the 'Urgh': A simple but effective way to keep out the cold wind is to close the 'urgh'. By minimizing drafts, you avoid disruptions to the warmth inside. You might be concerned about limited daylight, but this can be done selectively, especially during the dark hours.
4. Install a Rain Cover in Front of the Door: Placing a rain cover in front of the door offers numerous advantages. Besides keeping out rain, it prevents cold winds from entering through the doors and windows. Some people use the rain cover as a kind of summer porch and a foyer for storing coats and shoes in the winter.
Below are some examples.
With these clever tips, you can transform your yurt into a warm sanctuary during the winter months. Whether you choose a heater, curtains, or a rain cover, creating a comfortable and warm atmosphere in your yurt is within reach.
Preventing Moisture: How to Tackle It
Moisture Control in Your Yurt: Tips for a Dry and Cozy Space Between the months of September and February, it's crucial to pay extra attention to the moisture management of your yurt. Moisture can become an issue, especially in the wool insulation, leading to stains on the inner fabric. Here are some useful tips to prevent moisture problems and maintain your yurt effectively.
1. Avoid building your yurt during damp weather: It all starts with a good beginning. We steer clear of constructing yurts during damp, rainy weather. Wool easily absorbs moisture, and drying the yurt completely becomes challenging if the insulation is already damp.
2. Adequate ventilation, but not during rainy weather: During the winter months (September-February), regular maintenance against moisture is crucial. Ventilation is important, but it doesn't mean you should keep the windows open all day, especially during rainy weather. Moisture can seep in, affecting the insulation. Ventilate briefly (about 3 times a day) during dry periods to maintain a healthy air circulation.
3. Manage the stove and ventilation: Using the stove in colder months is inevitable, but it can also cause moisture. Similar to traditional homes, condensation can occur when you turn on the stove. Find a balance between opening the windows and using the stove. Ensure alternation and ventilation to minimize moisture problems.
People in Mongolia, where temperatures can drop to -40 degrees Celsius, have proven that it's possible to keep a yurt warm and cozy without moisture problems. It's a matter of finding the right balance.
Drawbacks of moisture:
- Stains on the inner fabric
- Development of odors
- Formation of mold
Bonus Tip: Fire smoke for a fresh start
To change the energy and reduce potential odors, occasionally light a fire smoke. It can not only improve the atmosphere but also help prevent mold formation.
Closing Thoughts:
With careful attention to ventilation, avoiding construction during damp weather, and a balanced use of the stove, you can enjoy a cozy and moisture-free yurt even in the coldest months. Maintaining the unique charm of your yurt requires a bit of extra care, but the result is a comfortable and inviting living space.
The Magic Behind the Felt
Imagine, somewhere in the endless steppes of Mongolia, where the sky is vast, and the wind roams freely. There, in that wild land, it all began. People needed something to live in, something portable that could brave the peculiar weather conditions. And thus, the yurt was born, but not just any yurt – a yurt made of felt!
